Barbados

The sport of polo is something of an institution on the island being brought by the British Cavalry to Barbados in the late 1800’s. Although the Barbados Polo Club dates back to 1884, it folded in 1929 during the Depression and was not resurrected until 1939. Henry Arthur Deane and Lyle Jones spearheaded the new club which eventually moved from the Garrison Savanna to Holders Hill in 1965. The last few years though have seen something of a revolution in the sport in the way that the game is played and run on the Island. The Introduction of the 14 goal Barbados Open in 2003 was the catalyst for this change, as well the facilities on the island have rapidly increased in this time with the addition of three new world class facilities; one at Clifton in St. Thomas, developed by insurance tycoon and one- goaler Bruce Bayley, Apes Hill (Waterhall) developed by construction magnate Sir Charles Williams, the patron of the High Goal Apes Hill Barbados team in the UK (winners of the 2009 Queen’s Cup) and Lion Castle, an urbane development with commanding views of the South Coast, developed by Kent Cole. There will be a 5th field added to this Roster for the 2010 season, developed by one of the largest developers on the Island, Philip Tempro. The development of these fields has not only relieved some of the pressure on the ground at Holders which has been used to its fullest capacity over the last 40 years, but also provides outstanding facilities for visiting players from the professional to the novice to rent horses, take lessons, stick and ball, play chukkers and participate in tournaments. The season runs from January until May, a number of visiting teams (some of whom like Cheshire and the Villages have been coming for over 20 years) make the pilgrimage to the island each season. Polo up to the 14 goal level is played, with the High point being the Breitling Cheshire tour in February and the Colombian Emeralds Barbados Open in April.

One Sandy Lane; the ultimate pied à terre that combines European grandeur, West Indian panache and all mod cons

By Claire Milford-Haven

As we drive through the elegant gates of One Sandy Lane, I begin to feel underdressed and overawed at the same time. The coolness of this imposing façade requires style, elegance and grace and I am displaying the polar opposite in an ill-fitting flowery vest, cut off shorts and Havaianas.

The Tiffany’s Foundation Polo Challenge brings “Katemania” to California

By Karen Kranenburg

In February 1964 when the Beatles touched down in New York for a landmark appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, “Beatlemania” swept the nation, and life for the 4 young lads from Liverpool would never be the same. On April 29th, when commoner Kate Middleton walked through the doors of Westminster Abbey in that now infamous Alexander McQueen dress to marry the future King, with the uttering of two little words, “I do” her life irrevocably changed.
